IUD removal is only a partial solution to Britney’s ambition to have more children
Pop legend Britney Spears recently testified in court that she has an IUD preventing her from getting pregnant – and that she’s not allowed to remove it even though she wants to have another child. The “legal prison” that supporters claim is a denial of her human rights, which gives her father and others power over every aspect of her life. This includes whether she’s allowed to marry and have another baby.
“I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby. I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have any more children.”
The president of Planned Parenthood issued a statement expressing solidarity with Britney, saying “We stand in solidarity with Britney and all women who face reproductive coercion. Your reproductive health is your own — and no one should make decisions about it for you. Every person should have the ability to make their own decisions about their bodies and exercise bodily autonomy,”
Fans of Britney and advocates for women’s rights worldwide hope that the singer will be granted her legal autonomy by the judge. Whether this happens sooner rather than later, could make the difference between whether the 39-year-old is able to have another child or not in the future.
We’re hoping that the judge sees the truth of the situation, and acts in Britney’s best interests. What are Britney’s options if the restrictive conservatorship is lifted?
Britney’s baby dreams – the good news
If Britney does manage to shake off her legal shackles & wants another child, it’s still possible for her to conceive a child naturally. Meghan Markle managed to get pregnant at the same age Britney is now. However, this does get harder as time goes on. Having access to her own money again, would of course give her the chance to work with some of the best clinics and experts in the world. Although time is cruelly running out for Britney’s baby dreams, she does still have a chance at having another baby.
Meghan Markle managed to get pregnant naturally at 39 – but not everyone can
Assuming Britney is over 40 by the time she is allowed to manage her own affairs again and have her IUD removed, natural conception could still work for her. While her chances would be reduced after the age of 40, it could still happen, as it does to millions of women over 40 every year – and of course, she could get help with her fertility from experts. Britney keeps very fit for her shows, and she would be able to access everything from special diets to alternative therapies to help improve her fertility.

Egg freezing is a great way to improve your future fertility
Freezing your eggs as soon as possible is one way to improve your chances of conception in the future. During the 13 years that Britney’s choices have been limited by her guardians, it is sadly unlikely that she would have been allowed to freeze her eggs for a future pregnancy. Because fertility is time-sensitive, it’s best to opt for egg-freezing as soon as possible, especially nearer the age of 40. If Britney sought specialist advice about her fertility, she may be advised to freeze her eggs, so that she could have the time and space to adjust to being in charge of her life again.

IVF has helped millions of people become parents
If Britney is in a hurry for a baby, or if she was trying naturally and it just wasn’t working, then she could try IVF. The success rate in women over 40 is lower than IVF in the ’30s, but it can still work. While many women do find IVF grueling, and Britney has suffered mental health challenges in the past that might mean IVF is too stressful, she would be able to afford multiple cycles if she chose the IVF route.

IVF with donor eggs can turn a hopeless situation around
Not everyone wants to use donor eggs, but women over 40 sometimes find that their egg quality has deteriorated, making it extremely hard to get pregnant. Using donor eggs means that she may have a higher chance of getting pregnant, but that the baby would not be genetically related to her (unless the eggs come from a relative). While this isn’t the first choice for many parents, sometimes it’s the only way to up the chances of a successful conception.

Surrogacy might be the answer to Britney’s broodiness
Finally, surrogacy may be the answer to Britney’s pregnancy goals. She may want to continue performing and touring and might choose to have a gestational carrier, instead of becoming pregnant herself. She may also be psychologically or physically unable to go through a pregnancy, but have eggs that are healthy. Surrogacy can also be undertaken with donor eggs.
We cover surrogacy too – visit our Building Families area for more information.
