Chrissy Teigen, 37 and John Legend, 44, are celebrating the surrogate birth of their fourth child – a boy named Alex after the surrogate mother.
The couple who live in Beverly Hills, California, said they knew their baby’s surrogate mother was the “perfect match” the moment they met her, with Chrissy adding her heart is “officially full,” thanks to her surrogate, Alexandra, for the “incredible gift”.
Teigen, who’s mother, Vilailuck, is from Thailand, and father, Ron, is of Norwegian descent, became engaged to American singer John Legend in December 2011, after four years of dating.
The couple first met while filming his 2006 music video for the song “Stereo“, in which she played his love interest.
They married in September 2013, celebrating their wedding on September 14 in Como, Italy. Legend’s hit song “All of Me” was dedicated to her..
The couple’s other children, which include a daughter born in 2016, and a son born in 2018, were both conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Heartbreak came when Teigen was expecting their third child in 2020. She experienced complications and a pregnancy loss at twenty weeks, initially described as a miscarriage.
She clarified in 2022 that the loss was “an abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance.”
After another round of IVF In 2023, Teigen gave birth to a third child, a daughter Esti.
On 19 June, just six months later, they announced the happy news of the birth of their fourth child.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Teigen, 37, told her 42.2 million followers that she had “always wanted four children” and shared stories of pretending to parent four toys as a little girl.
She went on to reference losing her son Jack mid-way through her pregnancy in 2020, which she has previously described as the “greatest pain” imaginable.
At the time of her baby loss, her openness about stillbirth was praised for demystifying the experience as she shared photos of her and Legend grieving in hospital following the birth and death of their child.
In her announcement post, she wrote: “After losing Jack, I didn’t think I’d be able to carry any more babies on my own.
“In 2021, we reached out to a surrogacy agency, with our first correspondence inquiring about perhaps having 2 tandem surrogates, to each bring us a healthy baby boy or girl.”
She admitted it was then that they also “restarted the IVF process,” in a bid for her to “try to carry [a baby] just one more time”.
The surrogate birth now gives them the perfect family of two girls and two boys, with Esti, daughter Luna, seven, son Miles, five, and new baby Alex.
Calling her surrogate Alexandra “the most loving, compassionate surrogate we could ever imagine” she wrote:
“We want to say thank you for this incredible gift you have given us, Alexandra.
“And we are so happy to tell the world he is here, with a name forever connected to you, Wren Alexander Stephens.”
She also paid tribute to the baby she lost in 2020, writing: “Our hearts, and our home, are officially full. And to our Jack, we know both their angel kisses are from you.”
In his own post, sharing several photos of his new family unit, Legend called Wren “our new love”.
Their surrogacy journey has been an easy decision as they are following in the steps of several other high profile celebrities using surrogacy, including Paris Hilton this year, Kim & Khloe Kardashian and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The huge cost of their surrogate birth will have been easy for the celebrity couple who have a combined net worth of $100 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
While Legend’s income accounts for the main proportion of their combined wealth, it’s believed Teigen herself has earned at least $7 million to $12 million per year on her own endorsements and projects. It’s claimed Legend makes $1 million more than that in just one season of the music show ‘ The Voice’.
